(Antarctica) Record high temperatures worldwide have accelerated ice cap loss at both poles warn climate scientists. "We estimate 5 years - tops - before we see 100% polar ice cap loss," says Dr. Sven Walker of Delft University. Rising seawater from the ice melt has already flooded low-lying areas around the world, with cities like Miami and Venice left wrecked and several Pacific islands completely submerged. "It is only going to get worse," says Walker.
Dr. Walker and his team of international scientists have been watching the ice caps closely for the last few decades. They have recorded substantial melt in the last 2 years, with an almost 80% loss during this time. "We saw some recovery from the global warming pandemic of the late aughts," notes Walker, "but the runaway greenhouse effect we've witnessed in the last decade has decimated both poles. Ultimately we're going to see all seawater - all water for that matter - evaporate but in the interim coastal life is going to continue to be unpleasant for millions of human beings."
Environmental groups are working with several governments to find long-term homes in zoos and arboretums for animals and plants such as the arctic fox, penguins, and the arctic poppy. The hope is that Enclosure will save some of these species before they follow the polar bear into extinction. Genetic samples of many Arctic and Antarctic flora and fauna are also being added to DNA banks across the globe. "Worse case," says Walker, "is we clone these animals post-Enclosure and bring them back to life."
Critics have argued that feeding and caring for charismatic mammals such as the arctic fox will be a waste of resources. "Once you've seen one arctic fox, you've seen them all." quips Roland King of the Conservative Enclosure Fund, a D.C. think tank that helps local governments prepare for Enclosure. "To waste valuable resources on an animal when we are in danger of losing human lives is ludicrous. We are encouraging the Enclosure governments to put these sorts of plans on ice."
Walker doesn't share King's opinion: "We need to preserve more than just the human species. Don't they deserve better than a slow death and extinction, especially when it comes from our hand?"
