(Olympia) State of Washington fish biologists today announced that all wild species of salmon are extinct. Small runs of wild salmon were last observed in 2111 in both the Columbia and Skykomish Rivers. Biologists had hoped to see a return, but after three years they have concluded the low, warm waters can no longer support the fish.
"It's a tragedy, but it's not a surprise," said Hana Li, the lead researcher.
Northwest runs of seven of the eight native "salmonids" had gone extinct by the turn of the century, but Chinook (also called King) salmon managed to survive. "Chinook were the strongest," said Li. She and others hoped they had adapted to warmer waters and might learn to live with the new temperature extremes. Field research over the past three years have dashed their hopes.
"Actually, those runs we saw three years ago were probably a weird outlier. It had been a couple years since we'd seen any runs at all." In 2011, the Northwest saw Cyclone Anita wash 13 inches of rain across Washington and British Columbia, cooling and feeding rivers. "It was probably just because of Anita that they could come in at all."
Salmon as a species are not extinct, and farm-bred salmon are being raised off the coast of Washington and Oregon. With rising temperatures, even those species may soon perish. Since 2050, nearly a million known species have gone extinct.
