(New York) The Dow Jones Industrial average took another tumble Wednesday in a sell-off trigged by a bomb attack in Karachi, falling 6.3%. Early reports—later retracted—suggested the bomb was made of low-grade nuclear material. As stock markets from Tokyo to New York fell, there was one sector showing remarkable resilience: polymer technology.
Industry-leader Petron last week reached a new high, trading for $397 per share before falling off slightly this week. That shouldn’t be construed as softness though; traders were just being bullish on rivals Ketchum Polymer and Schoenhard Industrials, which rallied to new highs. The trend is not without its ghoulish aspect, as Wall Street veteran Antonia De Ieso noted. “I mean, yeah, they’re doing well. But look at why. What are the implications?”
Indeed, two blocks from the Exchange floor, workers were busy riveting a polymer skeleton on the outside of new buildings designed to support the very shields Schoenhard and Petron are selling. Within six months, the NYSE is set to relocate to the new buildings, where MedPac oxygen will flow and BioInside lights will cast their sunny illumination. The buildings aren’t designed to be self-contained, but they will provide a measure of safety for those on the trading floor.
The question for people like De Ieso is: will there be anything left to trade then?
