Media Celeb Victoria Schaw Says Nano-Tech Causes Autism

(Coeur d'Alene, ID) Controversial survivalist and right-wing darling Victoria Schaw raised eyebrows following last night’s annual Miss North Idaho Fair and Rodeo Queen event. Schaw, a judge, had asked one of the contestants her opinion about technology. The typically anodyne questions generally draw anodyne responses, as did this one.

Unexpectedly, however, Ms. Schaw engaged the young contestant, Bitsy Jenkins. After explaining, haltingly, that she was “in favor” of it, “especially that nano stuff,” Schaw challenged Jenkins. The exchange was captured by a number of the parents on video headsets.

On the tape, Ms. Schaw can be heard saying, “Oh really?” Jenkins didn’t respond, and video suggests she was stunned into silence. Ms. Schaw continued. “You’d let them inject little machines into your veins? The government knows how to track nanobots—you might as well give Uncle Sam your headset address, girlie, so they can track you 24/7.”

At that point, someone in the audience shouted something at Ms. Schaw, who turned from her microphone and fired something inaudible back at the audience. At that point, the head of the North Idaho Fair, also a judge, interceded.

That was not the end of matters, however. After the competition, Schaw called a hasty press conference and held forth for several minutes on the evils of nanotechnology. Many of Schaw’s claims were typical for her, touching on themes of privacy, autonomy, government over-reach and personal liberty. But she continued on, claiming that nanotechnology also caused a host of medical issues “that those companies don’t tell you about.” Most explosively, she claimed they were a cause of serious medical conditions like autism.

“There’s a woman who came up crying to me tonight after the event. She said her daughter was given nanotech,” Schaw told the reporters. “She told me her daughter suffered autism as a result. There are very dangerous consequences.”

PSTV contacted several nanobiologists at Oregon Health Sciences University about the claim. “The most charitable view,” said Dr. Nasir Ali, “is that she has been listening too closely to the paranoia of the survivalists and anti-domers. There is no, I repeat no, evidence to suggest nanotechnology has any unhealthful side effects at all, let alone autism.”

The rodeo queen event, in which contestants are judged on horsemanship, personal interview, public speaking, PRCA Rodeo and North Idaho Fair knowledge test, and modeling, was won by Misty St. Jean.
