India's "Million Man Army" Marches Towards Pak-India Border

December 20, 2114

(New Delhi) In early January of this year, the Indian Army folded four of its northern divisions into the Punjab Regiment, creating the country’s largest infantry division—and the largest in the world. Dubbed the “million man army” by a dubious Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawab Ali Iqbal, the division began exercises in the vicinity of Jalalabad West even while Indian PM, Govind Kapur, strenuously denied that the force was anything but defensive. That proved a hollow claim this morning, as the Punjab Regiment made a move on the Sutlej Valley dividing the two countries.

The actual size of the division is closer to 300,000, but when that army began marching, a cloud lifted that could be seen as far as Lahore—and observers could be forgiven for thinking it was a million soldiers. The army hadn’t reached the border by sundown, but that didn’t stop Pakistan from scrambling a battery of Uqaab 520 jets to the border. When contacted for an explanation, New Delhi was silent. From Islamabad, Nawab Ali Iqbal warned that the desert would be “alight with fire” if India dared cross the dry riverbed once occupied by the Sutlej River.

That dry riverbed is an apt metaphor. Since the war of 2068, Pakistan has occupied land containing Jammu, Kashmir, and portions of Himachal Pradesh—including a section containing the headwaters of the Chenab River. The Chenab, one of the remaining active rivers the subcontinent, is critical to the survival of Pakistan. India, which has seen its population drop by more than half, largely from drought-related famine, has been at war with northern neighbors for decades in disputes over water rights.

If India does cross the border, it will find a stiff defense in the ascendant Pakistani war machine. Since the truce of 2102, when China joined forces with Pakistan, the balance of power has shifted in South Asia. An increasingly desperate India has begun relying on terror to extract concessions from its stronger neighbors. It has launched three nuclear strikes against Pakistan in the past four years, and conducted a campaign of bomings along the border. NATO, the UN, and ASIA-PAC have all condemned India, but few countries have the resources to retaliate.

Tomorrow, if, as expected, the “million man army” marches on the Chenab, it will be up to Pakistan alone to repel their advance. Updates as they become available.
