(Gresham) The City of Gresham is now in the control of the dissident group People First. A well-armed military-style platoon of 36 methodically made their way through downtown yesterday, seizing government buildings. They first struck the library at a little after 11am and moved onto the Department of Environmental Services, Public Works, Eastman Parkway Building, City Hall, and finally the main police precinct. Not a shot was fired.
People First issued a statement shortly before moving on the library. It read in part: "The City of Gresham has failed to safeguard the public trust. As PSTU reported last Thursday, the Gresham City Council is planning to sell key properties to Schneller Industrial. The people of Gresham will not stand for a Portland-style private takeover of the government. Therefore, for the citizens of Gresham, People First is taking control of the city. We are a trained platoon of volunteer military led by former Marine officers and are well-armed. Government officials, including the Gresham Police, are advised to vacate the premises when we arrive."
The national group was established in 2107 and originally sought to work with local governments to plan for post-environmental living. As corporations began weakening local governments to make way for large, private domed structures, People First stepped in to oppose them. At first, the group organized resistance groups in large cities where domes were planned. Outmatched, People First shifted focus and began organizing in smaller communities. They offer support and training to local leaders, but also train militia groups to seize control in the event of corporate threats.
To date, People First has seized control in 89 small communities, mostly in Texas, California, and Nevada. Gresham is the fourth-largest city seized by the group, and the second in Oregon.
By now, the process of transition is familiar. People First appoints a new city council and mayor and begins a public works campaign to prepare for small, publicly-owned domes. In Texas, state officials called on the National Guard to regain control, to no effect. As states and towns fall into civic chaos and private control, the military has been unable to respond effectively.
People First has yet to cede power any seized city. For those in Portland's largest eastern suburb, life under People First is just beginning.
