What is Enclosure?
The Hastings Group, a multinational corporation located in Portland, is developing a protective shield to cover a portion of the downtown core. This is an experimental design, but similar shields now protect many buildings around the metro area. On a larger scale, domed shields have been put over portions of Dallas and San Francisco. In those cities, the moment when the domes became operational was known as “enclosure.”
What happens to downtown?
The company denies that it plans to seal off the enclosure. A spokesperson for the company says it will be much like downtown today, and people may still come and go and even drive their cars through specially-designed tunnels into the city. Nevertheless, critics say it will indeed close off a portion of the city, and point out that Hastings is holding a lottery for residential berths inside the dome. In Dallas and San Francisco, similar promises were made, but those domes are now largely sealed off.
How many will live there?
Hastings projects an initial residential population of 115,000. However, the dome structure is built of modular panels that can be extended. A ten-year plan calls for an expansion of the dome with the construction of taller buildings. Hastings predicts an additional population of at least 200,000, with a final sustainable population of 350,000.
How do I get in?
Hastings is selling apartments in buildings inside the dome. However, since these are very expensive, the company will have many vacancies left over. Hastings will hold a lottery for these apartments, with winners agreeing to become employees in exchange for living accommodations.
Can I leave if I don’t like it?
If you do decide to buy a berth or win one, Hastings assures customers that they can leave at any time.
What happens if I don’t get in?
Experts believe that the earth will remain sustainable for up to another 30 years. Researchers are studying different survival options. These large city domes are only one method, and experts urge citizens not to panic. Indeed, the domes may end up proving to be unworkable, either for social or technological reasons.
What alternative technologies exist?
Many exciting technologies exist. Scientists are at work on stand-alone domes that will be life-sustaining. They envision one possible future where they are linked by subterranean transportation tunnels. Other possibilities include oxygen-enhancing nanotech to extend normal terrestrial life, temporary underground dwellings, the use of suits like those used in space while outdoors, or a combination of these solutions.
How worried should I be?
At this point, there’s no reason to be alarmed. Technology is moving fast, and both private and governmental groups are devoted to finding a solution to environmental change.
