(Hong Kong) A long-simmering dispute exploded on Tuesday when Chinese and Japanese warships exchanged fire in the East China Sea. The Chinese were the first to fire, launching a battery of missiles on the Japanese fleet north of Okinawa. The Japanese returned fire, but after an hour of bombardments, commanders from both countries decided to reign their ships in, though the fleets continue to maintain their positions.
Both countries are suffering from massive food shortages. China is in its thirteenth year of drought, while Japan, long dependent on trade for food, has relied on seafood almost exclusively for sustenance. Japanese fishing vessels have been warned not to enter territorial waters in the Yellow Sea, but China claims they have violated Chinese territory.
This is only the latest in a series of territorial disputes related to famine or drought. Turkey and Iraq, India and Pakistan, and the US and Mexico are all at active war over water, while countries like Canada and Russia, with still-viable fields, attempt to repel incursions from neighbors. This is not the first time Japan and China have exchanged fire over fishing rights, and it likely won’t be the last.
