(Portland) A small group of anti-Enclosure activists calling themselves "No-Domers" stormed city hall in the early morning hours. The activists were able to bypass a Metro security forces barricade by creating a disturbance in nearby Terry Schrunk Plaza. When security forces responded to a staged assault in the park, the activists broke through the inflatable polymer barricades surrounding Portland City Hall.
Once inside, the group smashed furniture, spray-painted anti-Enclosure graffiti on the walls and floor, and assaulted several Metro security officials that were manning security gates inside the entry-way. They fled the scene a few minutes later when Metro security forces regrouped and forced them from the building. Two security officers were injured in the scuffle. They were taken to Providence Medical Center with minor cuts and abrasions. Both were released within an hour.
The vigilantes are still at-large. The Metro security media relations office refused to comment on what they called an "on-going investigation."
Anti-Enclosure protests peaked in the late summer when temperatures routinely soared above 120 degrees F. Winter and cooler temperatures brought anti-Enclosure activists back outside where the protests have continued unabated for over 90 days. While the large majority of protesters have remained within designated "Free-Speech Zones," others have illegally marched on the city center and occupied city parks in and around Portland City Hall.
Mayor Bassett's office released a statement this morning in response to the invasion at city hall. It reads: "The criminal elements responsible for the destruction of city property and the assault on Metro personnel will not go unpunished. Metro security forces will use all means necessary to bring these perpetrators to justice. Despite the protests we are seeing across the country: Enclosure is imminent. We encourage all residents to enter into the Enclosure Lottery at their earliest convenience."
The statement goes on to mention that: "Peaceful displays of protest are welcome within the designated Free-Speech Zones located at NE Burnside and 12th Ave and on SE Hawthorne and 7th Ave."
